The memory foam was released to the public by NASA in 1980. According to Wikipedia the temperature-sensitive memory foam was initially referred to as "slow spring back foam", most called it "temper foam”. It was widely used in medical settings. Later it became used in mattresses, pillows, blankets, shoes.
The memory foam is also called the viscoelastic polyurethane foam.
